Skin and Muscle

You might think that skin and muscles are separate tissues.  And they are, kind of.  They are separate, but they are also connected (because of course, everything is connected on a fascial and cellular level).  This connection through the fascia interdigitates between cells, allowing them to communicate with one another, work together to get rid of waste or toxins, break down and repair one another, and just perform optimally in the body.  Skin and muscle tissue not only have similar building blocks being the internal workings of each cell (ie mitochondria) but they also share similarities in what they need to thrive.

Here is my list of non-negotiables for nourishing my skin and muscles:

  1. Movement

  2. Collagen or hyaluronic acid support supplement

  3. 2 liters of water daily minimum

  4. Breath work or meditation

Over the years I have learned much about human anatomy, how the body works and how one can best take care of their body.  This learning comes from a combination of scientific research and then my own personal experience.   And the above things have integrated their way into my daily habits over the years and keep me consistent and feeling good.

Movement has been a non-negotiable for me for years.  It helps regulate my stress, keeps me strong, and helps with circulation.  Your body needs circulation of lymph, blood, and nutrients to move them all around the body.  This helps decrease inflammation, and keeps your skin and muscle cells recycling and getting rid of the cellular waste that it needs to.

Years ago I started taking collagen, and then more recently started going back and forth between it and a hyaluronic acid support supplement.  One of the main tissues that make up your skin, specifically its elasticity, is collagen.  And hyaluronic acid is a supportive nutrient that helps your body make more collagen.  Collagen itself it an animal based protein, where as hyaluronic acid can be made from a vegan substance, so both work well to support skin elasticity and cell growth, and its nice to have plant or animal based options.  What is also so important about collagen or hyaluronic acid is that it supports all epithelial tissue, and epithelial tissue is also the main tissue that your intestines and digestive tract are made up of.  So these supplementary products also help with repairing the cells in your digestive tract.

Water is of course important to continue with getting nutrients around the body, and also keeps you, your cells, and whole being hydrated.  The body is composed mostly of water, so you need replenishment for your cells and overall functioning.

Breath work or meditation is one of my favourite tools for regulating stress.  When you can decrease your stress you help decrease inflammation, and increase ease throughout the body.  Breath is also a powerful tool to physically help nutrients, blood, and other nutrients move through the body.  Your heart is in charge of pumping blood which delivers those things throughout the body, so the more you can learn to have ease and less tension through the breath and body, the more you will benefit.

When you can start to integrate more care and support to your muscles, skin and body, your body will respond better.  Less pain, more resilience, less inflammation, more ease.  All of these things can take time to become a “habit” so don’t feel like you need to be learning and doing them all right away, but take a moment to pick something(s) that seem approachable or manageable for your lifestyle.  And once that is integrated flawlessly, move onto the next and over time these could become non negotiables moving you towards a more healthy and integrated mind-skin-body connection.
